“MASH” actor Alan Alda among speakers at Rome STEAM conference

ROME -- “MASH” and “West Wing” actor Alan Alda is going to be a keynote speaker at the 2016 Project Fibonacci Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math Conference.

Alda’s address will start at 7 p.m., Aug. 3 at one of the event’s offsite venues at the SUNY Poly Field House in Marcy.

Alda is founder of Stony Brook University’s Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and hosted the PBS television series “Scientific American Frontiers” from 1993 to 2005.

The conference Speakers Series will also feature Dr. Alex Filippenko, cosmologist from the University of California-Berkeley, and award-winning author appearing in over 100 TV documentaries who will present on “The Birth and Early Evolution of the Universe” during the morning of Monday, August 1, and “Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe” (presented by ANDRO Computational Solutions in cooperation with the Rome Academy of Sciences and the Mohawk Valley Astronomical Society) that evening, both at The Beeches; neuroscientist Dr. David Eagleman of the Baylor College of Perception and Medicine on “The Brain: The Story of You” on Tuesday morning, August 2 at the SUNY Poly Field House; Astronaut, test pilot and artist Alan Bean on “My Experience as an Artist on the Moon” at the Beeches on Wednesday morning, August 3; Canadian Astronaut and musician, Chris Hadfield on “Being a Space Musician” at the Rome Free Academy Auditorium on Thursday, August 4; and physicist, mathematician and naturalist Dr. Brian Greene of Columbia University, Founder of the World Science Festival who will present on “Breakthrough Thinking: The Fabric of the Cosmos and the Discovery of Gravitational Waves”, on the morning of Friday, August 5 at the SUNY Poly Field House.

The conference starts July 31 and runs through August 6 and headquarters at Beeches Conference Center in Rome.

All keynote presentations will be open to the public. Tickets to the events are $25 each or $150 for all seven and may be purchased at www.ProjectFibonacci.org or through eventbrite.com.
