‘Hidden Figures’ author Shetterly to speak at Stanley for Women and STEAM SeriesProject Fibonacci will present Margot Lee Shetterly, author of the New York Times Bestseller “Hidden Figures,” as part of the Women and STEAM Speaker Series at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the Stanley Center for the Arts, 261 Genesee St. in Downtown Utica. The event is presented, in part, by Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica College, ANDRO Computation Solutions, and The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties.

In “Hidden Figures,” which was made into the Golden Globe-nominated film now in theaters, Shetterly highlights the true story of the African-American women mathematicians at NASA in the 1940s through the 1960s who helped fuel some of America’s greatest achievements in space. Her book recovers the history of these pioneering women and situates it in the intersection of the defining movements of the American century: The Cold War, the Space Race, the Civil Rights movement, and the quest for gender equality.

Admission is $25 general, and $15 for MVCC and Utica College employees. A limited supply of free student tickets will be available at the door with proper ID for MVCC and Utica College students. Additional student tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 each. General admission tickets will be available at the door or online at www.eventbrite.com or www.projectfibonacci.org.

Tickets for all Cultural Series events can be purchased in-person at the MVCC Box Office, Information Technology Building Room 106, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday, and at the Utica Campus Bookstore and the Rome Campus Student Services Center; online any time at www.mvcc.edu/tickets; or over the phone by calling 315.731.5721.
