Barb Welch and Tamalin Martin, the leaders of the ILiFT Literacy Program, attended the CNY Summer Education through MO BOCES.

PK-5 teachers and administrators from around the region attended a Summer CNY Education Conference on August 11-12th. This two-day workshop helps educators identify ways to effectively encourage students to acquire and retain good reading habits. When students maintain those habits, the culture of practice within the school environment changes, and students tend to see improved outcomes.

The Conference is presented by Staff & Curriculum Development at the Madison-Oneida BOCES & the Mid-State Teacher Center. The event took place at Vernon Downs.

First day featured presenters Dr. Maria Murray Kelli Johnson and Katie Sojewicz spoke about “The Skill to Read.”  The second day of the program focused on “The Will to Read,”, and was hosted by Dr. Steven Layne. Layne spent the morning session discussing the importance of Reading Aloud as a tool for motivating young readers. In the afternoon session, Dr. Layne is working with the attendees on how a well-prepared book discussion can further evolve student interest in reading.

The 4-day hybrid event – 2 in-person days focused on reading, 2 virtual days focused on math (August 18-19).
